The workshop is part of BCIC\u2019s continued effort to simplify the permitting process and provide entrepreneurs with the information they need to operate safely and successfully in the community.<\/p>\n<p>Grease traps play a critical role in protecting the city\u2019s wastewater system by preventing fats, oils, and grease, commonly known as FOG, from entering sewer lines. Without proper systems in place, grease buildup can cause blockages, sanitary sewer overflows, costly repairs, and environmental concerns.<\/p>\n<p>During the presentation, BPUB representatives explained why grease traps are required for certain food service establishments and outlined inspection standards, maintenance schedules, and common violations to avoid.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe do get a lot of customers who think they can just open up a kitchen because they have their grandma\u2019s recipe, but they don\u2019t realize that there are safety procedures that need to be met and why the permitting process is in place \u2014 to make sure that these safety features and regulations required by the state are met,\u201d said Daniel Guerra, senior environmental compliance specialist with the Brownsville Public Utilities Board.<\/p>\n<p>Guerra added that understanding these requirements early can prevent major setbacks for new business owners.<\/p>\n<p>Business owners can contact the Brownsville Public Utilities Board Pretreatment Department at (956) 983-6514 for more information or to schedule a free inspection.<\/p>\n<p>BCIC continues to offer educational workshops and funding opportunities designed to help businesses thrive in Brownsville.<\/p>\n<p>For information about future \u201cPermitting Made Simple\u201d workshops, businesses are encouraged to contact BCIC or visit <a href=\"http:\/\/brownsvillecic.com\/es\/\">brownsvillecic.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The following was originally published on brownsvilletx.gov.
